OUR AMBITION:
With dense urban living on the rise and significant growth in U.S. bike infrastructure, electric bikes are at the intersection of trends impacting urban transportation. The demand for e-bikes in the US market is growing, and EVELO’s innovative approach is key to meeting this demand. By introducing smart e-bikes that offer alternative ways to commute to work, combined with a direct-to-consumer distribution model, EVELO is positioned to play a significant role in the future of urban transportation.
We've Perfected the Electric Bike
Our advantage?
A 60 mile range, automatic gear shifting, and ultra-powerful mid-drive motor design
EVELO electric bikes were designed to replace cars for short-distance commuting and enhance biking for recreation, while our exclusive Omni Wheel turns any bike into an electric bike in less than 30 minutes.
Back in 2011, our co-founder – Yevgeniy Mordkovich – was on a quest to find a solution that would enable him to spend more time riding together with his wife. He found himself in a situation where he enjoyed cycling, but due to different strength levels, on longer rides, it was tough for them to ride together – either one person would tire out or they would need to keep their rides short.
To fix the problem, he decided to build an electric bike from scratch for his wife. This would equalize the situation, allowing them to ride together farther and longer without getting tired – even give them the option of taking their young son with them in a trailer and spend more quality time together, as a family, outside and having fun.
In the meantime, his brother and eventual EVELO co-founder, Boris Mordkovich, was helping launch the world’s first person-to-person carsharing startup in Boston and San Francisco. This gave him first-hand exposure to how today’s society’s relationship with cars is beginning to shift.
Car ownership – traditionally viewed as a status symbol and a symbol of freedom – has started becoming more of a hassle, costly and inconvenient, not to mention the environmental aspects. People were looking for ways to eschew car ownership, but were limited in their options. When he saw the electric bike prototype that his brother, Yevgeniy, had built, it all suddenly came together.
Electric bikes represent something tremendously special. It opens doors for the non-cyclist, the person who normally would not consider riding a bike because of hills, distance, age, fitness levels or even the simple inconvenience of arriving to work sweaty. An electric bike negates all of those stumbling blocks, letting non-cyclists turn around, get on the saddle, and enjoy every minute of it.
The brothers put their collective technology, transportation, and startup experience together to bring a stylish, robust, and affordable line of EVELO electric bicycles to market. They built a company focused on helping the 99% of the population who currently don’t cycle to instead experience all of the joys, benefits, and fun of riding.
An electric bicycle is essentially a regular bicycle equipped with an electric motor that is designed to make the ride more enjoyable. Most can operate in three modes:
1. Pedal-Only – The bike is ridden just like a regular bicycle, powered only by the rider.
2. Pedal-Assist – The onboard computer activates the motor only when the pedals are turning in order to assist the rider. This mode makes it easier to pedal up hills and against the wind or to go faster on flat ground. The rider can control the level of assistance received from the motor by adjustments to the display unit mounted on the handlebars.
3. Electric-Only (also known as “Throttle-Only” or “Twist and Go”) – The rider simply twists the throttle to engage the motor and start moving (similar to the operation of a moped). No pedaling is needed when using the bike in this mode, making it great for taking a break without necessarily having to stop traveling.
All EVELO electric bicycles are equipped with all 3 of these options: Pedal-Only, Pedal-Assist and Electric-Only.
